A
28-year-old man, Lucky Matthew, has been sentenced to six months imprisonment
for stealing a Nokia phone worth ₦6,000.
The
verdict was passed at the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, after Matthew
pleaded guilty to three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
The
presiding magistrate, Mrs. Olufunke Hamzat, sentenced Matthew without an option
of fine. She said, “You are hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment without
an option of fine for pleading guilty to the charges against you.”
However,
Matthew’s accomplice in the crime, Chigozie Udeh, 26, pleaded not guilty.
Matthew and Udeh were neighbours in Agege.
According
to the prosecutor, Inspector Roman Unuigbe, the defendants broke into one
Obinna Williams home at Okeho Street, Dopemu, Agege. They committed the crime
at about 3.00am on June 23. Unuigbe said they made away with the Nokia phone.
Unuigbe
said the offences committed contravened Sections 285, 404, and 409 of the
Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However,
the magistrate granted Udeh bail in the sum of ₦50,000, with two sureties in
like sum.
She
adjourned Udeh’s case till July 15.
