Nigerian Community in Zimbabwe Asked The Government Not To Kick Them Out

Simon Udemba, president of the Nigerian Community in Zimbabwe, has urged the government to reconsider its ban on foreign businesspeople in some sectors.

"I would like to plead with the Zimbabwean government and people to be considerate in effecting this exercise," Udemba told AFP.

"As an African and resident of Zimbabwe I am particularly concerned if the approach will be economically beneficial for the country."

He said Nigerians in Zimbabwe are contributing to the development of the country and that they should not be forced out of business.

"I believe Nigerians are providing necessary services. Nigerians have been here with Zimbabweans through all these years of isolation by the West, they never deserted Zimbabwe," he said.

Two Nigerian Students Drown in Volta River, Ghana [PHOTO]

Two Nigerian students schooling at Knutsford University College, a private university at East Legon in Accra, on Friday drowned in the Volta River at Akosombo, a popular tourist destination in the Eastern Region.

The Nigerians, identified as Edward Alele, 22, and Charles Honesty, 20, were among 200 third-year students who had visited Akosombo as part of the school’s SRC Week celebrations.

According to sources, after their normal tour of some important tourist sites at Akosombo, the students converged on the Afrikoko Hotel at Akosombo for lunch.

The source explained that some of the students had wanted to use the hotel’s cruising boats, but after being told that each passenger was to pay GH¢10 for the cruise across the Volta River, the students thought it was too expensive and therefore abandoned the plan.

₦20.6 Trillion Fraudulently Transferred out of Nigeria in 10 Years – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Tuesday said about $129 billion (N20.6 trillion) was fraudulently transferred out of Nigeria in the last 10 years through various sources.

The commission, quoting Global Financial Integrity, based in Washington D.C., cited some of the sources to include tax avoidance, corruption, tax evasions, illegal mining activities, drugs and human trafficking.

In 2012 however, the commission collaborated with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to address illicit financial flows out of the country and recovered about $13 million suspected to be proceeds of criminal activities.

A former Niger Delta militant, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, was arrested in Cotonou, Benin Republic, Tuesday Afternoon by Beniniose police also known as gendarmes.

According to a statement released by Mr. Dokubo-Asari’s counsel, Festus Keyamo, the former militant who also owns a university in the West African neighbouring country, was picked up sometimes between 1 and 2 p.m. around the Lubeleyi roundabout and taken to an unknown destination.

“We want to emphasise that Alhaji Dokubo-Asari carries on legitimate business and has been living partly in Benin Republic for many years now. In fact, he owns houses, schools and an academy in that country,” a statement by Mr. Keyamo read.

Mr. Keyamo also stated that Mr. Dokubo-Asari’s detention is politically motivated and a bid by unidentified individual working with the Beninoise authorities to “keep him away as 2015 approaches.”

Manchester City has signed Nigeria U17 Striker, Kelechi Iheanacho, says father

Manchester City has completed a deal for 17-year-old wonder kid Kelechi Iheanacho, according to the player's father.

Kelechi caught the eye of clubs across Europe with his performances at the Under-17 World Cup, where his six goals helped Nigeria claim victory in the United Arab Emirates.

Previous reports have suggested Manchester United, Chelsea and Porto wanted to land the young forward, but now according to his father it is Manchester City who have secured his services.

Gunmen attacked Stella Oduah – FCT Police Command

The FCT Police Command on Monday in Abuja confirmed that gunmen fired shots at the car of the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah in Abuja.

A Police Public Relations Officer, Altine Daniel, told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. on Friday, adding that the Minister was not in the car when the incident happened.

Ms. Daniel, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, however, said that the incident was reported to the police Monday evening at about 5:30 p.m.

Confirming the incident, the minister’s spokesperson, Joe Obi claimed that the shooting took place at Ministers’ Hill in Maitama area of the Federal capital territory, Abuja.

It was not clear if the vehicle was the Minister’s private car, or an official one, but Ms. Daniel also said Ms. Oduah was not in the vehicle when the incident took place.

Onye Ozi (The Messenger) Premiere: Check out Stars on The Red Carpet

The Lagos premiere of Obi Emelonye’s latest film, Onye Ozi, took place on Friday at Silverbird Cinemas, Ikeja. The premiere, which started at 7pm, saw several household names in the Nigerian entertainment industry, as well as the stars of the film in attendance.

Onye Ozi is an Igbo language movie (subtitled in English), which stars Okey Bakassi, Ngozi Igwebike, Stephen Moriaty, D’Kachy Obi-Emelonye, and Tony Aclet.

At the weekend, Psquare were at the Leaders Club grounds in Dar-es-salaam where they put up a superb performance – aside their stage craft, one act caught our attention.

At the concert, Peter Okoye, who recently got married to Lola Omotayo gave a wrist watch to a female fan (not the first time though).

But that’s not all – Peter did something that some Tanzanian fans considered a slight on his wife – the singer was captured passionately kissing the female fan.

If Peter was a Nollywood star, it would be safe to say it’s all about acting; since he is not yet one – what do we say?

A 21-year-old upcoming rapper, Samuel Falowo, whose stage name is Pro’Meth, was announced winner of the third edition of the “Don’t Break Da Beat” rap competition.

The Abuja based rapper beat nine other finalists to win the top prize of $20,000 (₦3,200,000) at a grand finale held at 10 Degrees Events Centre, Oregun, Lagos.

Popular musicians who performed at the event included pop singers Wizkid, May D, Sean Tizzle and rappers Olamide, Jesse Jagz, Phyno, M.I and Skales.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s father says his son is missing

James Iheanacho, the father of Golden Eaglets star player, Kelechi Iheanacho, has declared his son missing.

The 17-year-old forward, has been the subject of in-fighting and tussle between agents, ever since he was adjudged the Most Valuable Player at the just concluded U-17 World in UAE.

“I don’t know the whereabouts of my son. I have not been able to reach him for the past three days,” the older Iheanacho told Hot FM Owerri on Friday.

It is believed that one of such agents has travelled to Europe with the teenager, with the lure of landing him a lucrative deal with a big club.

Vincent Enyeama beats Ibrahimovic to Clinch France Player of the Month

The French National Union of Professional Footballers (UNFP) unveiled its monthly award on Friday, to be given to Vincent Enyeama on Sunday at the Lille-Toulouse game.

Enyeama topped the poll at 71 percent of votes, beating Sweden and PSG striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic who had only 19 percent, and his Uruguayan teammate Edinson Cavani on 10 percent.

The 31-year-old shot-stopper produced an impressive performance in October, helping Lille claim three consecutive league games. With the addition of two other wins in November, they were able to climb to second place in the Ligue 1 table.

Nigerian Traders and Shop Owners To Be Chased Out Of Zimbabwe Come Jan 1 2014

This is obviously not the best of times for Nigerian retailers and shop owners plying their trade in African countries.

Last year, Nigerian retailers and petty traders were asked to close shop in Ghana because petty trading by Ghanaian law is reserved for Ghanaians.

Well, this time around the government of Zimbabwe is set to arrest Nigerian and Chinese retailers unless they close shop by the end of the year.

According to a report by newzimbabwe.com, the Permanent secretary for Zimbabwe’s empowerment ministry, George Magosvongwe, told a Parliamentary committee that the government would enforce regulations which reserve certain sectors of the economy to Zimbabweans on January 1, 2014.

The question has been asked several times and in various forms – how romantic is an African man? Can an African man serenade his lover?

Well, Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke seems to have provided answers to this recurring question.

You would recall the actor left the country on Tuesday, with a promise to take his girlfriend, Nadia Buari around the world. The couple are actually in Spain where they celebrated Nadia’s birthday. To make her day special, the pair had a private dinner at DI Costa, and guess what? Jim invited Spanish Mariachi to serenade Nadia, and what follows – she cried all through – can you beat that?

So I ask again, who says African men are not romantic?

Nollywood Actress Uche Ogbodo Secretely Marries Ex-Footballer

Nollywood Actress Uche Ogbodo in this interview with Encomium magazine confirmed she is married traditionally and might have her white wedding before the year runs out.

Congratulations, we heard you are married?

Yes, that is true. Thank you.

How does it feel to be married?

It is God’s blessing. It is a thing of joy, everybody prays for it.

Why did you opt for a secret wedding?

We have done everything we need to do; the main ceremony will take place soon. Most likely before this year runs out, the white wedding will take place. So, I cannot say I had a secret wedding per se.

A 75-year-old man, Fashola Fakorede, on Thursday urged a Customary Court, in the Lagos suburb of Igando, to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Funke, 49, for allegedly beating him.

Fakorede told the customary court that his wife had turned him into a punching bag and also inflicted injuries over his body.

“My wife wants to kill me. She beats me every day. I don’t want to die now, save my life. My wife always beats me if I asked of food or anything. She has turned it to a routine affair, all the scars on my body are as a result of her battery on me,’’ he said.

Fakorede said his wife no longer takes care of him, adding, “She goes out and returns home at will without seeking my permission. She can go out for days and if I queried her, she will hit me with any dangerous weapon she can lay her hand on at that moment.

The singer visited Ikeja Government Primary School where he presented the pupils with stationery and electronics. Thereafter, he stopped by the Heart of Gold Children’s Hospice and the Heritage Homes Orphanage and showered the residents with gift items.

According to latinpost, Queen Bee wants a trial separation from Jay Z because she feels that he isn't fulfilling his duties as a husband and father to their 19-month-old daughter.

Jay Z reportedly visited his wife to have a 3-day mini vacation at a private resort to make their relationship better, while Beyoncé was in Australia performing for her tour.

"Jay Z's early November trip to Australia was not just a family getaway, it was a last-ditch effort to keep his marriage afloat," a source said. Lecturer, 4 other suspects paraded as Boko Haram members

Nigeria’s Department of State Services said it uncovered a Boko Haram cell in the central Nigerian state of Kogi and arrested five persons, including a university teacher.

Miss Marilyn Ogar, the Deputy Director, Public Relations Department of State Services, claimed in Abuja that the suspects were allegedly plotting to launch violent attacks in Igalaland in Kogi.

She said the don, identified as Muhammed Yunus, taught Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Kogi state University, Ayingba.

Ogar, who presented the suspects to newsmen, said that three of the suspects were arrested in a mosque in Zuba, FCT, while two others were arrested in Jos and Kogi respectively.

She said one of the suspects, the lecturer, was the spiritual leader and recruitment coordinator while others were head of operations/instructor, chief courier and foot soldiers in Kogi.

“God told me to be an advocate for the rights of gays” – Methodist Pastor

A United Methodist minister convicted of breaking church law by officiating at the same-sex wedding of his son in the US said on Tuesday he is unrepentant, declaring he has been called by God to be an advocate for the rights of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgender people.

The Reverend Frank Schaefer, testifying at the penalty phase of his church trial, again refused to promise he wouldn't perform another same-sex union. Three of his four children are gay.

The church “needs to stop judging people based on their sexual orientation”, he said.

“We have to stop the hate speech. We have to stop treating them as second-class Christians,” he told a jury of fellow United Methodist pastors.

Husband seeks marriage dissolution because of wife’s alleged weekend party lifestyle

A 38-year-old man, Ahmed Kareem, on Tuesday urged an Ilorin Area Court to dissolve his marriage to his wife, Aminat, over alleged going to parties every weekend.

Kareem, of Osere Area, Ilorin, told the court to dissolve his four-year-old marriage to Aminat, because she has no time for him and his family.

“My wife has no time for her family. Instead, she prefers attending parties and abandoning her domestic responsibilities,” he said.

He said the marriage was contracted in 2009 and had produced one male child.

“I want an end to this marriage because I cannot cope with her party lifestyle anymore,” he said.

Ghanaian TV host/actress, Joselyn Dumas is the latest addition to reality series, 'Lekki Wives' – she talks about her role in a recent interview with Ovation.

Here is excerpt;

How was filming on the set of the successful "Lekki Wives". Is working on TV in Nigeria dramatically different from Ghana?

No, we are so alike; we are cousins; Nigerians and Ghanaians are so alike, the only difference is our names. I played a lead character role and I’m a new wife that has been introduced in this season. It was very different, I wouldn’t say it was challenging as I’ve just come off and have learnt so much on the ‘Adams Apples’ set. I thank GOD for Shirley Frimpong-Manso as if she hadn’t given me that chance I would have sacked on "Lekki Wives’. It was good, a great experience and I think that the only challenge that I have is I was trying to get some Nigerian words to roll off my tongue and it just wouldn’t roll (laughs heartily). That was the only challenge.

Adam Levine has been crowned People magazine's Sexiest Man Alive for 2013. The news may not be that surprising, as Adam has been rumored to be the magazine's new pick ever since last week. This marks Adam's first time being picked for the top honor and the first time that People has selected a musician to take home the top spot. (Even though previous winners such as Johnny Depp and Hugh Jackman have musical tendencies, they didn't get famous for their skills as professional singers.)

Private Jet Owners Begin Strike Over New Aviation Charges

Private jet owners in the country yesterday commenced an indefinite strike over a directive from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) announcing a new price regime for all private airlines operating in the country.

In a circular dated November 18, 2013, and signed by the agency’s director of operations, Mr J.C. Onyegiri, on behalf of the managing director, all foreign registered aircraft engaging in non-scheduled operations were directed to pay the sum of $3,000 fees for every departure except round trips without changes in passenger manifest or return ferry. Such fees, NAMA maintained, must be paid in advance and before any departure.
