Nigerian Supermodel Oluchi talks ‘Africa’s Next Top Model’

Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Orlandi was in South Africa to launch Africa’s version of Tyra Banks’ Next Top Model TV show. She spoke to Munya Vomo.

‘When I went to America after winning the first M-Net Face of Africa, I struggled,” said Nigerian international model, Oluchi Orlandi, as she tried to hold back her tears.

“I want to dedicate the next five to 10 years of my life to giving back to my African community and bringing Africa’s Next Top Model here is the place to start. I may look 22, but I am not, so I can’t keep doing this; someone has to take over from where I have left off,” Orlandi said.

Africa’s Next Top Model will seek out beauties across the continent and have them converge in Cape Town to compete for the job.

“We are trying to have a show that will celebrate the beauty of the diversity of Africa. I have people in New York who said I would never find beautiful women here and that bugs me. I want to change that perception,” she said.

Mob sets robbers ablaze for stealing recharge cards

An angry mob has set three suspected armed robbers ablaze in Ikotun, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt on Thursday that the robbers were set on fire on Wednesday evening, shortly after robbing a recharge card trader at Second Junction bus stop on Governor’s Road.

Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed burnt tyres, carcass of a burnt motorcycle and some human flesh on the side of the road.

The recharge card trader, Ese Akporhono, who had a bandage on her head, told our correspondent that the robbers came to her shop posing as customers.

She said a few seconds later, the suspects pointed a gun at her and stole recharge cards worth ₦400,000 before fleeing.

She said, “Around 5pm, I was closing the shop when the men approached me saying they wanted to buy recharge card.

Sam Mendes will direct the next James Bond film

Sam Mendes will direct the next James Bond film, which will be released in October 2015.

Mendes, who directed the last 007 film, Skyfall, had previously stated that the idea of directing the next installment of the Bond franchise made him feel "physically ill" but after talks between the director and producers, he said: "I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24. I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli for a second time."

Some succour came the way of the family of deceased highlife musician, Fatai Olayiwola Olagunju, when the management of Daily Needs Industries Limited donated ₦500,000 for his children’s education.

Kidnappers Abduct Hyundai Staff, Demand ₦25m Ransom

A yet-to-be identified kidnap gang on Tuesday abducted a member of staff of Hyundai Motors Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Chinyere Nwajei, in the Festac Town area of Lagos State, on her way back from work.

According to reports, the unknown gang had since made contact with the victim’s family, demanding the sum of 150,000 dollars (₦24,750,000).

The victim, who works at the company’s Ajose Adeogun, Victoria Island branch, was said to have been kidnapped at night at the Festac link bridge.

It was also gathered that the victim who was alone in her car, was not only abducted but that the gang also made away with her car, a 2012 Hyundai Accent, which is yet to be found.

A 29-year-old Nigerian, Jayeola Abiola was yesterday sentenced to 12 months in jail in UK for a sham marriage.

To be able to stay in UK, the Hull University masters student paid a Portuguese, Vania Pinheiro-Fernandes, 29, to be his bride. He also paid another Nigerian, Ayodeji Abbis £1,000 to act as the best man.

The couple were caught when officers of the UK Border Agency were tipped off by the Hull Registrar that the couple seemed to barely know each other when they were interviewed at the rehearsal.

Kunle Afolayan Release Poster for His Upcoming Thriller 'October 1'

Producer/Director Kunle Afolayan, who is currently in production of his next movie 'October 1' has released the first poster for the film.

The movie was scripted by Tunde Babalola – it is a psychological thriller detailing the activities of a northern police detective, Dan Waziri who was posted to the western region to unravel the mystery behind a series of female murders in the community. He soon discovers that the prime suspect is Aderopo, the prince of the community. Waziri however does not have plenty of time as he is expected to bring the Prince to book before the Nigerian flag is raised on October 1.

The film, which is being produced by Kunle’s Golden Effects production company, will star Sadiq Daba, Kehinde Bankole, David Bailie, Kayode Olaiya, Nick Rhys, Fabian Lojede, and Demola Adedoyin.

Fox News hosts Bob Beckel and Greg Gutfeld were discussing on the show ‘The Five’, when Greg pointed out to Beckel that a militia group had killed at least 28 students at a boarding school in Nigeria over the weekend.

That comment obviously enraged Bob who went into a barrage of words:

“They are a bunch of thugs, murderers and they go after schools, Christian schools,” Beckel explained. “They’ve done this, they’ve burned them down. We don’t do that here. If we burned down your mosque here, you’d be really upset.”

“Now, I’ve already got enough mail from you all, that you don’t like what I say about not letting your students come here,” he continued. “If it were up to me, I would not have another mosque built in this country until we got it worked out who was not a terrorist.”

He later said, “And by the way, is any Muslim out there, any Muslim cleric, any Muslim leader said anything about this? No! You’re cowardly! Because you’re afraid they’re going to put a — what do they call it? — a fatwa on you. Well, fatwa this!”

6 Feared Dead In Ebute Metta Building Collapse (PHOTO)

The death toll in a collapsed building, early Thursday, in Lagos has risen to six.

Emergency rescue officials told Premium Times that seven people, including two children aged 2 and 4, have been rescued from the rubble.

The 3-storey building at Oloto Street, Ebute Metta collapsed at about 2.35 a.m. trapping about 10 people.

Rescue efforts are still ongoing.

Police arrest guard over killing of LAUTECH student

The Oyo State Police Command, yesterday, paraded one of the suspects allegedly involved in the killing of a student of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Miss Seun Adaramoye.

The remains of the student was said to have been discovered on June 20, this year by a passer-by beside a guest house at Ogbomoso.

The police gave the name of the suspect as Alex Akinyemi, a security man at the guest house.

While speaking with newsmen at the Oyo State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Iyanganku, Ibadan, Assistant Commissioner of Police, CID Unit, Dansuki Galadanchi, said the suspect was exposed by the closed circuit television, CCTV.

He said: “When the owner of the guest house heard about the incident, he called the CCTV engineer to play back the recordings of the camera. He saw where one of his security men named Alex Akinyemi carried the corpse and reported the matter to the police.

Drug baron abandons cocaine, as another suspect excretes 54 wraps of drugs

A suspected drug trafficking syndicate at the Murtala Muhammed International airport Wednesday abandoned cocaine-weighing 5.9 kilogrammes

The drug was detected by men of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Lagos led by its commander, Mr. Hamza Umar.

Court Orders IG to Pay Detained Boko Haram Suspect ₦500,000

An Abuja High Court Wednesday ordered the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Muhammed Abubakar, to pay a suspected member of the Boko Haram sect, Mohammed Sani Sambo, the sum of ₦500,000 as compensation for illegal detention.

Justice S. C. Oriji, sitting at Court No. 16, Jabi, Abuja, handed down the order in a ruling on the enforcement of fundamental human rights filed by Wan Mohammed Shehu, on behalf of the applicant.

Court processes showed that the applicant was arrested and detained since June 13, 2012 on the suspicion that he was a member of the proscribed Boko Haram group but he was never charged to court till date.

The applicant was first detained for about three weeks in Kaduna where he was arrested at his residence at No. 14 Abdullahi Balarabe Road, KTC Layout Kawo, before he was transferred to

“We Could Have Averted Killing of 30 Students if…” Gov. Geidam

Governor Ibrahim Geidam of Yobe State Wednesday said the reported killing of 32 persons, mostly students on July 6, at a secondary school in the state could have been averted had the telecommunications services to the state not shutdown, after the imposition of  emergency rule in the state.

Woman Delivers Monkey-like Baby In Kaduna

The latest assertion to the popular saying, “Wonders never end,” has just been recorded in Kaduna State where a young Fulani woman gave birth to a baby with a monkey-like face.

The woman, an indigene of SabonIceh village, gave birth to the monkey-like creature Monday morning at the General hospital Kagarko, Kagarko local government, after several hours of labour.

One of the nurses, who attended to the woman on arrival, told LEADERSHIP that, “the pregnant woman was rushed to the hospital at about 7:30 am, Monday. And we immediately took her into the labour room.”

“The woman came in through the out-patient department (OPD) after seeing the doctor on call and I decided to rupture her because the cervix was fully dilated. After I ruptured her, fluid measuring about 26 litres gushed out after which she started bleeding. All this time, the baby was still in the womb.”

JTF Arrests Traditional Ruler and three others for Crude Oil Theft

The Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Pulo Shield, has arrested a traditional ruler (names Withheld) and three others for alleged oil theft.

The suspects were arrested for stealing 2,000 metric tonnes of crude oil on Akassa waterways in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

They were said to have allegedly used an unregistered vessel to steal the product.

The monarch, a third-class chief, according to the state’s ranking of traditional rulers, hails from Twon Brass.

He was said to have been apprehended after crew members arrested in the vessel named him as their main sponsor.

A security source said JTF had been trailing the monarch before his arrest.

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, popularly known as Lady Gaga has temporarily shut down her account – leaving her over 39 million Twitter followers dismayed.

The international sensation's picture is now of a Twitter egg and her profile now read: "This interface has been shutdown temporarily. Please check back for updates."
