Movie Director Leila Djansi Blasts Nigerian Actors, says they are Insecure

Call her controversial, that won’t stop the Director of “I sing of a well” and “Sinking Sands”, Leila Djansi from speaking her mind whenever she wants to. In her recent post, the 32-year-old American/Ghanaian filmmaker took a swipe at Nollywood and Ghollywood stars – she described them as being materialistic, having awkward diction and that they embark on needless vacation just to cover their insecurity.

"Do quote me anywhere on this. It’s about time someone said this. My fellow film industry folks in Ghana and Nigeria, especially actors. Enough with the cars, shoes, bags, clothes and needless vacations. You don’t do these cos you deserve them but cos of the need to show off and that’s some high level of insecurity you need checked. You spend money you make from doing some crappy material on designers who take that money, go on vacations with their fellow men, whom they have married and have sex with or fellow women… (None of my business tho. Ghanaian actress and TV presenter, Joselyn Dumas fell on stage when she wore the very high boots of Denrele during the shooting and recording of Channel O’s O News Live in Accra, Ghana.

Denrele who had Joselyn as a guest on his couch threw a ‘truth or dare’ at the actress. Joselyn chose to dare Denrele, which resulted in Denrele asking her to take off her Christian Louboutin shoes. Joselyn was then made to wear Denrele’s boots and when she tried to dance in the boots, she took a mighty tumble.

Toolz: Don Jazzy is my personal person, Don Jazzy is like somebody that, he thought me a lot about the industry, he’s my personal person.

Ebuka: Never dated?

Toolz: No, people say that I have a crush on him, but I have to say he has crush on me

Ebuka: So you think Don Jazzy has a crush on you?

Toolz: Don Jazzy is awesome and amazing.

Put Al-Mustapha under surveillance, OPC warns FG

The O'odua People’s Congress (OPC) at the weekend admonished the presidency to keep an eye on Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, the former Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the late Head of State, General Sanni Abacha, who was recently discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in Lagos.

In a statement issued by the Osun State Coordinator and Secretary of the OPC, Mr. Oyeyinka Awoyemi and Mr. Waheed Olaniyan respectively, the group said the federal government should ensure that al-Mustapha was kept under security watch despite being discharged and acquitted of his alleged offences by the court.

You were a broadcaster for a while before you moved into acting. Why the u-turn?
Well, I have always been an actor. I had my first breakthrough in acting in 1959. My official professionalism was shown in 1974. It was entitled Candle in the Wind and it was the first television movie on Nigerian television.

How and why were you chosen for the lead role in Tinsel?
It was just grace. I understand over 500 people auditioned for the role, but I was chosen. I was surprised because I am an actor that does not jump all over the place to get my face seen, and I had left the industry for over 20 years sojourning in the United States. I have been in the industry for a while. A reporter was talking to me sometime ago and asked ‘Don’t you consider yourself lucky? You just came into the industry and you are at the top!’ I said, ‘Is that so?’ It has nothing to do with me being a fantastic actor or being special.

Police Nab Men Who Chopped Off NYSC Member’s Hand

The police in Bayelsa State have arrested two men, who chopped off the hand of a female member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Folakemi Akinbode, in Yenagoa.

The two men were arrested, while attempting to sell her blackberry phone, which was inside her bag when she was attacked. The incident happened in Abuah in Yenagoa local government area.

The men, identified as Ebi Jatto and Weriye Aluwa, were arrested on Wednesday, at the neighbouring Koroama community by youths of the area, who were aware of the attack on the lady.

The suspicion of the youths of Koroama was aroused as they were aware that the boys, who were known, could not afford such a phone they were attempting to sell.

Akinbode was attacked and her hand severed by the boys, who also made away with her hand bag.

Dubai Football Club, Al Nasr offers $2.3m to sign West Brom star Osaze Odemwingie

Dubai football club Al Nasr has increased its offer to sign Nigerian striker Peter Osaze Odemwingie from English club West Bromwich Albion, just days after negotiations with the Premier League club had stalled.

In the last few days, Al Nasr entered into fresh talks to sign the 32-year-old footballer, the Express & Star news paper reported.

The UAE club previously made a bid of £850,000 ($1.31m), which was rejected as too low by West Bromwich Albion officials. Al Nasr officials are now believed to have increased their offer to £1.5m ($2.3m) in a bid to sign the player, the report said.

Another potential stumbling block is the fact Odemwingie is believed to be reluctant to move abroad and is keen to remain playing in the English Premier League.

Zack Orji condemns indecent dressing by Nigerian actresses

Zack Orji, a Nollywood actor and former Chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), has condemned the level of indecent dressing among actresses in the country.

Orji, a pastor in the Power Life Assembly Ministry, Owerri, made the condemnation in Owerri on Wednesday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria.

He noted that movies which were originally meant to promote the people’s cultural heritage and discipline were being destroyed in the name of civilisation.

“Most movies shown in recent times are capable of destroying the moral background of children as they have become the most popular movie audience.

NDLEA clears Beauty Queen, Anna Ebiere Banner for Indonesia trip

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has cleared the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria 2013, Miss Anna Ebiere Banner, for her trip to Jakarta, Indonesia for the forthcoming Miss World Beauty contest.

The Principal Manager Human Resources of Silverbird Group, Emmanuel Amadi and Rights Acquisition Manager, Silverbird, Patricia Ndubuisi accompanied the beauty Queen who visited the Agency’s headquarters at Shaw Road, Ikoyi Lagos.

The Agency congratulated her for winning the 2013 beauty contest and wished her success at the global beauty pageant billed to hold in Indonesia.

The warm regards of the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade was conveyed by the Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Ofoyeju Mitchell.

WAEC releases 91.38% of May/June examination results

This afternoon, the WAEC released the results of 1,543,683 candidates who sat for its May/June 2013 Secondary School Certificate Examination.

According to reports, this represents 91.38 per cent of 1,689,188 candidates, who registered for the examination,

The Head of National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Dr Charles Eguridu, announced the results on Wednesday when he addressed a news conference in Lagos.

Eguridu said 889,636 candidates obtained six credits and above, while 1,074,065 others obtained five credits and above.

Hong Kong seizes ivory, rhino horns worth £3.4m in container from Nigeria [PHOTOS]

Customs officials in Hong Kong have seized a shipment of illegal ivory, rhino horns and leopard skins worth £3.4 million.

It is Hong Kong's second big bust of endangered species products in a month and the latest in a string of seizures over the past year.

A government statement said 1,120 ivory tusks, 13 rhino horns and five pieces of leopard skin were confiscated at Hong Kong's port.

The 2.2-tonne haul was found hidden in a container declared as wood from Nigeria.

Last month, more than two tonnes of elephant tusks worth an estimated £1.46 million were confiscated by customs officials, who said it was the city's biggest ivory seizure since 2010.

Usher's Ex-Wife Files for Emergency Custody Hearing After Son Nearly Drowns in Pool

Usher's ex-wife, Tameka Foster, has filed paperwork requesting an emergency custody hearing in the wake of the pool accident that put their young son in the hospital.

The former couple divorced in 2009, with the Voice coach receiving primary custody of their two sons in 2012.

In the court filing, Foster's attorney, Angela Kinley, claims that "the children are at risk while in the care of third-party caregivers...while (Usher) travels around the world for his work-related activities," NBC News reports.

On Monday, 5-year-old Usher Raymond V was hospitalized after almost drowning in his father's pool while trying to retrieve a toy that was stuck in an underwter pool drain, according to an Atlanta police report.

As for the emergency hearing, it is scheduled for Friday.
