FG promises 18-hour daily power supply by 2014
The
Federal Government has assured Nigerians that they will start enjoying power
supply for 18 hours as from 2014.
The
Minister of State for Power, Alhaja Zainab Kuchi, stated this while speaking
with reporters at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja on
Wednesday.
She
also assured that power generation in the country would peak at 10,000
megawatts by the end of December 2014.
The
minister said the increase in power generation would translate into between 17 and
18 hours of power supply in the country.
The
minister in company with the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, were at the
party’s secretariat to brief its leadership on the activities of their ministry
in the last one year.
Nebo
directed the minister of state to answer most of the questions by journalists
after their interaction with the members of the National Working Committee of
the party.
Delta State Imposes Curfew on Warri North
The
Delta State Government Wednesday announced measures to check the escalation of
crisis in Warri North Local Government Area of the state, following two days of
violent attacks by suspected militants that have left at least four persons
killed and scores of houses torched.
With
the curfew, the government has banned movements on waterways between dusk and
dawn as part of the measures to halt the spate of violence.
Also
banned from operating on the waterways in the area are all speedboats with two horsepower
and above.
Secretary
to the State Government (SSG), Mr Ovuozorie Macaulay, announced the curfew
yesterday, at the end of the State Security Council meeting, held in Asaba, and
presided over by the state Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan.
Macaulay
said: “(The) Council approved the immediate ban on all movements on the waterways
in Warri North Local Government Area from 6p.m. to 7a.m. to check further
skirmishes in the area.”
Military Takes Over in Egypt, President Morsi ousted
Late
Wednesday, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, the head of Egypt’s army, announced
that President Morsi was no longer in office during a speech on state
television.
Police
later began arresting key presidential aides and the leaders of the Muslim
Brotherhood.
Sisi
also suspended the country’s constitution, saying that new parliamentary
elections will be held.
The
army chief declared Head of Supreme Constitutional Court Adli Mansour as the
interim president.
Though
President Morsi had said on his Facebook page that the army’s move was a
“military coup,” asking the Egyptians to “abide by the constitution and the law
and not to respond to this coup.”
Meanwhile,
Egyptian security forces have detained two senior leaders of the Muslim
Brotherhood close to Morsi. Rashad Bayoumi, the group’s deputy leader, and Saad
al-Katatni, the leader of the Brotherhood’s political arm, were arrested just
hours after Morsi’s overthrow.
State
media also reported that arrest warrants had been issued for a total of 300
Brotherhood officials.

EFCC Declares Ex-Convict, Ade Bendel Wanted
The
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has declared a 419 kingpin, Ade
Adedeji Olumide better known as “Ade Bendel” wanted. The Owan born-businessman
is wanted for allegedly perpetrating a fraud of $ 7.5 million fraud while
serving a jail term in Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison. Ade Bendel was
convicted and sentenced to a 6-year jail term in 2007 for defrauding an
Egyptian Army General. While serving his term, Ade claimed to have become
born-again and he even organized several crusades on his release.
The
declaration was made known by the Head of the Commission’s Media and Publicity
Unit, Wilson Uwujaren.
The
notification reads in part, “the public is hereby notified that Olumide Adedeji
(a.k.a Ade Bendel) is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission
(EFCC) in connection with a case of Criminal Conspiracy and obtaining the sum
of $ 7,855,500 and ₦3,000,000 from a Nigerian citizen while serving a jail term
at Kirikiri Prison, Lagos.

An
unfortunate Chinese computer technician found his private viewing habits
projected into the public square last week in China’s Jilin Province.
Yuan
Mou, a repairman tasked with fixing a huge LED screen hanging above the city’s
main railway station, accidentally broadcast a pornographic film on the monitor
for ten minutes, while hundreds of shocked bystanders gathered to look on.
According
to the South China Morning Post, Yuan Mou was hired to fix the screen and after
a long day’s work, began watching erotic film ‘The Forbidden Legend: Sex and
Chopsticks’ on his laptop, without realizing it was still connected to the
billboard-sized public monitor.
Yuan
reportedly remained unaware of his mistake until Southern Advertising Company,
which owns the screen, called to alert him, at which point -- according to
later police reports -- he is said to have immediately disconnected his
computer and throw the Sex and Chopsticks VCD out the window.

Delta Police Parade e-banking fraud suspects
The
Nigeria Police, Warri Area Command, Warri, Delta State, has arrested and
paraded two suspects involved in e-banking transfer fraud to the tune of four
million naira.
The
Area Commander, ACP Hussaini Rabiu, over the weekend, paraded the suspects in
Warri.
The
two suspects are Mr Edema Rapheal (20), an apprentice, who resides at No. 9,
Ogbelaka Street, Benin City and Mr Friday Wuruyai (21), a Federal Government
Scholarship 200 level student of Benson Idahosa University, studying Computer
Science and resides at No. 24 Abala Street, Warri.
The
four million naira, said to have been electronically stolen, belonged to one Mr
Chris Ekpekurede, an engineer, who resides at No. 2, Saniyo Street, Off Jakpa
Road, Effurun.
Ekpekurede
was said to have received a phony text message on June 12, 2013 which read:
“Dear customer, your First Bank online security is still not active. Please,
log in below to activate your online verification privacy Department 2013 First
Bank Plc.”
The
unsuspecting Ekpekurede was said to have logged in all his bank details
including his ATM pin number. Thereafter, he received an alert from First Bank
Nigeria Plc that he had transferred four million naira from his account.

Controversial Wedding: Deeper Life Suspends Pastor Kumuyi’s Son & Daughter-In-Law (VIDEO)
The
Deeper Christian Life Ministry has suspended John Kumuyi, the second son of its
General-Superintendent, Pastor William Kumuyi, over his controversial wedding
in Jamaica.
The
report was contained in an online video on Tuesday.
John
was suspended on account of his bride, who flouted the church’s rules by using
make-up and other flashy ensemble that accompanied a fitted wedding gown. The
gown also had see-through sleeves. His bride, Love Odih, was accused of
flouting the established doctrine of the church on conservative dressing.
Though
the new couple, who got married on June 15, 2013, had apologised, the apology
did not stem the tide of criticisms by numerous members of the church.
In
the video, their apology was read on Saturday by Pastor Akpofure, during the
church’s monthly miracle and revival programme, held at Deeper Life Conference
Centre, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
SSS Parades Suspected Kidnappers of Rhodes-Vivour's Wife, Daughter
Three
members of a gang that kidnapped the wife, daughter and driver of a judge of
the Supreme Court, Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour, in May, this year, were among
the seven suspects paraded by the State Security Service (SSS) in Benin City,
Tuesday. The Rhodes-Vivour family was held captive for 18 days by their
captors.
The
other suspects paraded were three extortionists who threatened to kill their
victim if he didn’t pay up and a musician who was paraded for trafficking in
persons.
Edo
State Director of SSS, Mr. Bello Bakori, who paraded the suspects before the
state governor, Adams Oshiomhole, and media men said the suspects had confessed
to the crime and that three members of the kidnappers’ gang who abducted the
judge’s family members were still at large.
He
said Mrs. Rhodes-Vivour and her daughter were kept in a house in Upper Sakpoba
area of Benin City from where the suspects were arrested. All the kidnap
suspects are from Delta State while the trafficker in persons hails from Edo
State.
3 die, 1 abducted in Warri communal clash
At
least three persons have been comfirmed dead, while over 5 people were injured
and one held hostage in yesterday’s renewed attack on three Itsekiri
communities in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State.
Most
parts of the three communities were razed in the attack that forced the
residents to take refuge in the bush.
The
Commanding Officer of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in the area, Lt Col. Frank
Etim, could not be reached for comments, but the Chairman of Warri North Local
Government, Mr David Edun, who comfirmed the attack to Daily Sun said
investigation into the remote and immediate causes of the latest crisis was in
progress.
Randy Bishop Rapes, Impregnates, and Aborts Pregnancy For 15 Year Old Girl
A
Port Harcourt-based cleric, Bishop Chibuike Nwabueze was on Tuesday paraded
before the media by the Rivers State police command for allegedly raping a
15-year old girl.
Although
he claimed to have both been hypnotised as well as set up by a colleague
bishop, the cleric confessed to having a “carnal knowledge” of the teenager in
question.
He
said his ordeal was orchestrated by another bishop in whose office the immoral
act took place, adding that plot to ensnare and embarrass him followed on the
desire of his brother bishop to displace him as the chairman of all bishops in
the state, a post he (the accused bishop) currently occupied.
The
accused also denied reports that he assisted in aborting the pregnancy that
resulted from the illicit act with the teenager, alleging that it was the
girl’s father who did the abortion, while he, the bishop, paid for the cost.

Diya, others to pay N5.5m for assaulting, battering mortician
A
Lagos High Court, Ikeja has ordered a former Chief of General Staff, Gen.
Oladipupo Diya, and other directors of his funeral services firm to pay N5.5m
as damages for assaulting and battering a mortician, Mr. Oluwatosin Onamade, in
2008.
Justice
Opeyemi Oke, in a judgment on Monday, described the action of Diya and others
as “an example of impunity” executed to force Onamade out of the management of
the company.
“The
action of the defendants is condemnable; it is an arbitrary use of power,” Oke
held.
She
held that the defendants took the law into their hands by assaulting and
battering the claimant and unlawfully seizing his belongings.

Army Officer, 17 Soldiers Arraigned for Communicating with the Enemy, Other Offences
A
lieutenant in the Nigerian Army, one Warrant Officer and 16 soldiers were
yesterday arraigned before a General Court Martial for offences ranging from
communicating with the enemy, cowardly behaviour, murder and manslaughter,
among other offences. They were being tried by the 3 Armoured Division in line
with its operational responsibility.
At
the inauguration of the court, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Armoured
Division, Major-General Ebiobowei Bonna Awala, remarked that the accused
soldiers facing the court martial from the 3 Armoured Division, Joint Task
Force (JTF), Maiduguri and Special Task Force (STF), Plateau State, had been
duly investigated for the various offences they were alleged to have committed.
Awala
said the court martial was one of those instruments conferred on him by virtue
of the Armed Forces Act Chapter A 20 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria to
address problems of this nature. He said discipline was the fulcrum upon which
the military career rests, adding that
ASUU Embarks on Indefinite Strike
The
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has embarked on an indefinite
strike following the failure of the federal government to implement part of the
2009 agreement reached by the two parties.
The
union’s demands include the upward review of the retirement age for professors
from 65 to 70; adequate funding to revitalise the university system; progressive
increase of budgetary allocations to the education sector by 26 per cent;
transfer of federal government property to universities; setting up of research
and development units by companies; payment of earned allowances; and
renegotiation of the signed agreement.
Briefing
journalists in Lagos yesterday, Chairman of the University of Lagos (UNILAG)
branch of the union, Dr. Karo Ogbinaka, said after its National Executive
Council (NEC) meeting held at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, it
directed its members to down tools immediately as a result of the federal government’s
failure to pay the academics earned allowances which included excess workload,
administrative responsibilities, and postgraduate supervisory allowances, among
others.
