Father of Three Commits Suicide After Sack

A father of three, who was identified as Patrick Essien, was reported have committed suicide, yesterday, in Benin after he was allegedly sacked from the transport company where he worked. His dangling body was found in the roof of the toilet at the residence at Imasabemwen Street, off Siluko Road. Some co-tenants, who spoke to journalists, said the deceased had complained earlier that he had been sacked, although they could not volunteer the name of the company. According to them, a co-tenant, who went to the toilet to ease himself, peeped in after knocking several times without getting any response. That was when he saw a body dangling from the roof.

They said the late driver had been living at the residence for the past 14 years without any wife or children but that he told them he had a wife and three kids somewhere. According to them, "we saw him this morning. He said he was sacked and we later found him dead in the toilet." His corpse was later taken away by the police.

Mountain of Fire Church, General Overseer Sued Over Demolition of Private Property In Defiance of Court Order

A Pentecostal sect, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), its General Overseer, Daniel Olukoya, as well as its trustees have been joined in a suit claiming the church illegally demolished a landed property and forcibly evicted its residents in defiance of a court ruling. The demolished property was located at 6th Avenue, Plot 2, Prayer City, Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Magboro, Ibafo, Ogun State.
The plaintiffs identified a certain Pastor Frederick Olubunmi Alewi as the person who carried out the demolition on behalf of the church. SaharaReporters learned that Mr. Alewi disclosed that he obeyed the instructions of his “spiritual father,” Pastor Olukoya, in flouting a court order which had earlier asked for all parties to maintain the status quo while the case was heard by a judge.

WAHALA: Miss Universe Canada Crowns Wrong Contestant Winner, Blames Typographical Error

WAHALA: Miss Universe Canada Names Wrong Contestant Winner, Blames Typographical Error

Miss Canada Universe announced that Denise Garrido of Ontario had been crowned the prestigious title on Saturday.
However, a mere 24 hours later, pageant organizers admitted that a typo had occurred, which led the brunette beauty to be erroneously ranked in first place.
The organizers attributed the mistake to "human error" and said that the results showed that Garrido had in fact landed the No. 4 spot, while Risa Santos of Alberta actually won the title of Miss Canada Universe.
After she'd learned that her hopes for a sash had been dashed, Garrido opened up to The Star about the heartbreaking news, "My heart sank. I was so sad."

But in true professional pageant form, Garrido has apparently taken the career-changing blow like, well, a champion.

The police swiftly arrested them and took them inside the building, before a crowd of journalists.
“It is the first action that we have taken in the Arab world... I prepared this international team in Paris and they were sent yesterday (Tuesday) to Tunis,” Femen’s leader in Paris, Inna Shevchenko, told AFP by phone.

Mystery solved, White Tiger coat caused by Single Gene Mutation

Mystery solved, White Tiger coat caused by Single Gene Mutation

The spectacular white coats of white tigers are caused by a single change in a known pigment gene, a new study has found.
The research, to be published in the June issue of Current Biology, might help end decades of speculation that the trait is a genetic defect.
Researchers from China's Peking University mapped the genomes of a family of 16 tigers living in Chimelong Safari Park in southern China, including both white and orange individuals. They then sequenced the whole genomes of each of the three parents in the family.
In the end, the researchers found the white tiger carries a variant of a pigment gene called SLC45A2, which had already been associated with light coloration in modern Europeans and in other animals, including horses, chickens, and fish.
The variant of the gene primarily inhibits the synthesis of red and yellow pigments but has little to no effect on black, which explains why white tigers still show characteristic dark stripes, the researchers said.

PHOTO from AU Summit – Why Africa is not moving forward

Below is a slice of a recent statement from the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, on the performance of the Nigerian delegation to the just concluded African Union Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

“President Jonathan spurned the slot allocated to him to articulate his contribution to the regional discourse. He did not attend and no representative was sent to deliver Nigeria’s message. In ordinary administrative appraisal of the action, it was not just irresponsible but gross dereliction of executive duties,” the party stated.

From the photo above, am sure CPC would understand why the President did not attend the summit.

Don’t pay ransom to pirates, kidnappers – Naval chief

Don’t pay ransom to pirates, kidnappers –Naval chief

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Dele Ezeoba, has urged members of the Nigerian Trawlers Owners Association not to pay ransom to pirates and kidnappers, who attack their trawlers. Paying of ransom to the kidnappers, Ezeoba said, would perpetuate the vice in the country.
According to him, the country has a responsibility to adopt the measures to discourage the crime. The Navy Chief spoke while receiving the National Executive of the Nigerian Trawlers Owners Association led by its President, Mr. Joseph Overo, in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said, “The challenges you have highlighted are common knowledge to all of us. It happens unfortunately within our maritime space, not because we want it, but because in our society, we have people who take pride in committing this crime.
“When you pay this ransom, you have opened a floodgate for the vice to continue. It then becomes business and a means of livelihood for the abductors.

EFCC Opposes Sylva's Application to Travel Abroad

EFCC Opposes Sylva's Application to Travel Abroad

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Tuesday told a Federal High Court in Abuja that the former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, might escape trial if allowed to travel out of the country.
Sylva, who is standing trial before the court for alleged money laundering related offences, is asking the court for permission to accompany his wife on a foreign trip.
When the matter came up yesterday, counsel to Sylva, Mr. O.I Olorundare (SAN) told the court that the ex-governor's wife was scheduled for surgery in a United Kingdom hospital on May 31 and needed his company.
He, therefore, urged the court to release his international passport to enable him embark on the trip. Sylva, however, promised to return for trial and to also return the passport to the custody of the court.
The former governor said the grounds for his application was that it was part of the conditions attached to the bail granted him June last year, to always seek the court's leave before engaging in foreign trip.

Lawmakers seek compulsory HIV test for intending couples

The Bauchi State House of Assembly is working on a bill that will make it mandatory for intending couples to undergo HIV screening.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Monday that the bill, sponsored by Ilyasu Zwall, representing Lere/Bula Constituency, had already gone through first and Second reading.
He said that the bill, when passed, would require intending couples to be tested for HIV in any government recognised hospital “at a time not earlier than one week to the day of the wedding.” It also made it mandatory for individuals to conduct tests when marrying additional wives.
According to the lawmaker, the enactment of the law is long over-due considering the number of lives being lost as a result of marriages contracted without checking the HIV status of couples.

National Universities Commission scraps ‘Pass’ grading in varsities

National Universities Commission scraps ‘Pass’ grading in varsities

THE National Universities Commission (NUC) has scrapped the ‘Pass’ grading in the nation’s universities.
The implications are that, 44 per cent rather than the initial 39 per cent will now be the mark for assessing failure just as ‘Third Class’ will now be the least grade for graduation in all the universities.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Prof. Abdulrsheed Na’Allah Tuesday at the pre-convocation press briefing of the university, the directive would be easier to implement at KWASU as the university had started the grading system since establishment three and a half years ago.
He said: “The KWASU had technically eliminated the pass grading by making 45 per cent the least scores for success. Even the NUC had recently given the same order to all the nation’s universities.”
No fewer than 231 students of the institution are to graduate on Saturday, June 1 this year during its maiden convocation ceremony.

Boko Haram Claims Victories Over Military, Seeks Help From Afghanistan

The leader of Islamist extremist group, Boko Haram said his group has scored several victories against the military during an ongoing offensive while themselves sustaining little damage, in a video seen by AFP on Tuesday.
“Since we started this ongoing war which they call state of emergency ... in some instances soldiers who faced us turned and ran,” Abubakar Shekau said in the hour-long video.
He claimed Nigerian forces “threw down their arms in flight.”
He called on like-minded Islamists in countries including Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to join the fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria.
“We call to us our brethren in these countries I mentioned. Oh! Our brethren, come to us,” he said in the video, which alternates between Arabic and the Hausa language spoken across northern Nigeria.
Nigeria launched an offensive against Boko Haram on May 15, after President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in the country’s northeast, the Islamist insurgents’ stronghold.

The video was delivered to AFP through an intermediary in a manner similar to previous Boko Haram messages. The images of Shekau in the video are consistent with those previously released.

Baby Rescued From Sewage Pipe in China

The dramatic rescue began after cries were heard from a fourth-floor apartment toilet.
Alarmed neighbors heard the sounds and saw a tiny foot inside a ceramic bowl. There was a baby inside.
They called the fire department in the Chinese city of Jinhua, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Unable to pull the infant out out, rescuers went to the floor below and sawed away an entire section of sewer pipe.
But still, the baby was stuck, so both the section of pipe and the infant were taken to a local hospital.
Working together, rescuers and doctors began removing the pipe, piece by piece, as shown in video from CCTV.
It shows the exact moment hands in white gloves gingerly pulled away a part of the pipe, revealing the tiny face of a newborn.
The afterbirth was still attached.
CCTV reported the infant, a baby boy, was rescued Saturday. He is in stable condition.
No one has come forward yet to claim the child, and police say they are looking for his parents.
Jinhua police issued an appeal on the social media website Weibo.

"Mom, come back! The baby is resilient and alive. Please show up, Mom. This is your own baby and he should return to your warm embrace soon."
