FG Installs 906 CCTV Cameras in Lagos

Kiyo: The Federal Government has installed no fewer than 906 Close Circuit TV cameras in strategic parts of Lagos State to enhance security surveillance, the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Adebiyi Mabadeje, said on Wednesday.

Mabadeje announced this at a news conference in Ikeja organised to mark Governor Babatunde Fashola’s sixth year in office.

He said the cameras were deployed from the 1,000 earmarked for the state, saying the devices were already assisting security agencies to track the activities of criminals. The commissioner noted that the installed cameras were sophisticated devices as they had the capacity to generate video, voice and data simultaneously, to ensure effective surveillance.

 “Though they have not been officially commissioned, they are already being put into use by the security agencies to track the activities of criminals,’’ he said.

Filo: Good development, however, nothing was said about maintenance.

OJODU BUILDING COLLAPSE: NEMA Rescue Two Workers Alive

Kiyo: In spite of their earlier decision to end rescue operations at the site of the collapsed building in the Ojodu area of Lagos, officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) have gone back to work following distress calls lodged by residents that they believe there are still people under the rubble still alive.

The decision paid off as two more people have been brought out alive.

The four storey building under construction belonging to Four Square Gospel Church in Lagos, South West Nigeria, caved in on Tuesday killing one worker.

Prophet T.B. Joshua’s church service caused unprecedented traffic in Accra

Kiyo: A church programme by the founder and leader of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), Prophet T.B. Joshua in Accra Tuesday has caused an unprecedented traffic in the capital and virtually brought vehicular movement to a halt.

Thousands of worshipers flocked the church on the Spintex Road to be a part of the historic visit of the popular man of God who has millions of followers across the world.

As early as 2am Tuesday, the road to the church was choked with vehicles as people travel from as far as Benin into Ghana to see the Nigerian prophet. The situation attracted huge media attention.

However, some journalists who went to the area to report on the situation motorists describe as "chaotic" were detained for several hours by security personnel of the church.

Their crime, Emmanuel Anteh, a journalist with Joy News on Multi-TV, narrated to Myjoyonline.com, was that they did not seek permission before filming the chaotic situation at the church premises.

Due to the historic church service, the entire Spintex enclave has been swamped by a fleet of cars, causing heavy and unbearable traffic on an already traffic prone road.

Although the service was billed to start at 7am, reports say people started arriving as early as 2am.

Kiyo: Madonna sold an abstract painting by French artist Fernand Leger for $7.16 million on Tuesday to raise funds for girls' education projects in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries.

The 1921 painting, "Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge," which carried a pre-sale estimate of up to $7 million, was purchased by an unidentified buyer at Sotheby's Impressionist and Modern Art sale in New York, according to the auction house's website.

The singer, who bought the artwork in 1990, said "I cannot accept a world where women or girls are wounded, shot or killed for either going to school or teaching in girls' schools. We don't have time to be complacent. I want to trade something valuable for something invaluable - educating girls!"

Though the details of the aspiring politician’s dirty dancing are still murky, apart from the fact that it occurred at a Congress event, but according to reports, he was suspended for his drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Thakur reportedly first gained prominence after he led vociferous protests against the book of Rajiv Gandhi’s alleged killer AG Perarivalan in May 2011. He had also organised a massive demonstration against senior BJP leader LK Advani later that year in November.

Lauryn Hill Sentenced to Three Months in Prison For Not Paying Taxes

Kiyo: Grammy-winning singer Lauryn Hill, who pleaded guilty in 2012 to failing to pay taxes on more than $1.8 million earned from 2005 to 2007, was sentenced to three months in prison on Monday.

Monday's sentencing also took into account unpaid state and federal taxes in 2008 and 2009 that brought the total earnings to about $2.3 million.

Despite having paid more than $900,000 in the past several days, Hill still owes interest and penalties, the U.S. attorney's office said.

In a forceful but controlled statement to the judge punctuated by occasional raps with her fist on the podium, Hill described how she failed to pay taxes during a period when she'd dropped out of the music business to protect herself and her children.

Filo: In addition to serving three months in prison, Hill must pay a $60,000 fine.

After she is released from prison, she will be under parole supervision for a year, the first three months of which will be spent under home confinement.

She is to report to prison by July 8 though it's not clear where she'll serve her sentence. 

American company, Wool & Prince invented a shirt that stays fresh for 100 days?

Kiyo: It could spell an end to laundry days – or at least make them a much less frequent chore.

Manufacturers claim they have invented a shirt that stays clean even after 100 days of wear. The garment resists odour so effectively that it even smells fresh after being worn during rigorous exercise, its makers claim.

It is also said to need no ironing as it is made of is wrinkle-free material that can withstand even the roughest of treatment.

American company Wool & Prince said they developed the shirt for men who hate having to wash their clothes so often.

They sent researchers around the world wearing the shirts doing everything from backpacking in the Andes to dancing in sweaty New York nightclubs to test their design.

The shirts are made of wool which lasts six times longer than cotton. Laboratory tests have shown that wool fibres resist tearing and can bend back on themselves more than 20 000 times without breaking. Cotton breaks after 3 200 bends. Wool is also highly resilient to wrinkles because it has a natural crimp.
