World's Oldest Person Dies in Japan at 116

World's Oldest Person Dies in Japan at 116

The world's oldest person, and the oldest man in recorded history, has died in western Japan at the age of 116.
Japanese officials say Jiroemon Kimura died Wednesday of natural causes in a hospital near Kyoto where he had been receiving treatment for pneumonia.
Guinness World Records says Kimura, who was born in 1897, is the world's only man to have lived to 116 years of age. It recognized him as the world's oldest living person in December, after a U.S. woman died at the age of 115.
Kimura, who worked at a post office and later was a farmer, is survived by seven children, 14 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
Media reports say he attributed his longetivity to getting outside in the sunlight and eating meals until he was only 80 percent full.

With Kimura's death, 115-year-old Misao Okawa, a Japanese woman from Osaka, is now the world's oldest person.

"The woman's life had been saved since she was carried all the way, but the baby could not be saved. Labour was induced for the delivery of the dead foetus," Dr Kunjamma Roy, head of the

Pregnant mother died after Trainee Surgeons took out her ovary instead of her appendix

Pregnant mother died after Trainee Surgeons took out her ovary instead of her appendix

The devastated husband of a young mother who died weeks after two trainee surgeons mistakenly took out an ovary instead of her appendix said today he had been “revolted” by their NHS experience.
Maria De Jesus, from Dagenham, was heavily pregnant when she developed pains in her stomach and was admitted to Queen’s Hospital, Romford.
Today her husband, Adelino De Jesus, 53, described the “litany of errors” which lead to her tragic death less than four weeks later on 11 November 2011.
He said: “She went to hospital with stomach pains and we were told she needed to have her appendix out. She had the operation, and left hospital eight days later, but the pain continued. We wouldn’t have ever imagined what they had done.”
Last week an inquest heard that tests carried out on the removed tissue revealed that it was one of her ovaries, not her appendix, on October 31.
But doctors at the hospital only realised the mistake on November 9, two days after when Mrs De Jesus, 32, was readmitted to the hospital and the day she miscarried.

Nelson Mandela 'Seriously ill' In Hospital

Former South African President Nelson Mandela has been readmitted to hospital with the recurrence of a lung infection.
The 94-year-old's health deteriorated at about 1.30am local time and he was taken to a hospital in Pretoria, where he is said to be in a "serious, but stable condition".
Government spokesman Mac Maharaj told South Africa's Enca Television that Mr Mandela's condition was "serious this time".
"The situation is serious this time, but doctors have assured us he is comfortable," he said.
It is the second time in recent months Mr Mandela, a revered figure across the globe, has been in hospital - and the fourth health scare in six months for the anti-apartheid leader.
The last time was in May/April earlier this year when he was kept in hospital for 10 days to receive treatment for pneumonia.
Mr Maharaj told Sky News: "Some members of his family have been there with him all the time.

"It is a condition he has had over a long period of time ... and we hope this time it will also be treated successfully."

My regrets as NAFDAC DG –Akunyili

The former Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Prof. Dora Akunyili, on Tuesday named her inability to establish a Drug Mart as one of her greatest regrets.
Akunyili, who shot into limelight for revolutionising the fight against fake drugs, also blamed fake and counterfeit drugs in the country on lack of alternative to the chaotic and unregulated drug markets.
She said she had nursed the idea of a drug mart right from when she became a NAFDC DG but was unable to realise the dream.
The former Minister for Information, who spoke at the inauguration of the state Drug Mart in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, poured encomiums on the Governor of the state, Mr. Seriake Dickson, for the initiative.
She said the idea of establishing the mart was approved by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Medical workers may begin strike Thursday

FROM Thursday, all the federal medical facilities in the country may be shut down as crisis between the workers and Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu may take a new turn. The health workers, under the auspices of Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) and Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations (AHPA), have continuously called on President Goodluck Jonathan to relieve the Minister of the burden of administering health matters in the country, saying the university don has demonstrated the lowest level of inefficiency ever seen in Nigeria’s history of health delivery.
Indeed, The Guardian learnt that their exclusion from boards might be seen by the unionists as a slight on them and in equal measure, they have resolved to use the strike action to force President Jonathan to remove Prof. Chukwu from office.

Nigerian girl going home with new face and new life

San Diego, California Talk Radio Station - 760 KFMB AM - 760kfmb

A Nigerian girl who was born with severe facial defects is getting a chance at a new life thanks to San Diego surgeons.
Favour Mwuzor finally gets to be a kid again. But to get to this point it took a flight from Nigeria, several surgeries and a lot of love.
Doris Mwuzor started looking for help the day Favour was born, but her search was going nowhere.
"In Nigeria - I did not know what she was going through - I knew physical deformity - but why - I didn't know until I came here," she said.
Favour was born with a congenital disorder which caused underdeveloped ears and a severely disfigured jaw. And to correct them, doctors in Nigeria knew she needed to go somewhere with better medical services.
So a non-profit organisation called Fresh Start Surgical Gifts brought her to San Diego, where she's undergone three surgeries in six months, and was forced to wear a device called a distractor.
"Waking up from surgery - her first question to the nurse was - when do I get to ride my bike again," said Amanda Thompson.

20% of Handbags Carry More Bacteria Than A Toilet

20% of Handbags Carry More Bacteria Than A Toilet

Filo: We stumbled upon this article and we thought our readers, especially ladies might find it interesting. Here it is.

Astonishingly, a high percentage of women's handbags carry more bacteria than the average toilet, says British company Initial Washroom Hygiene.
The company reported that, on average, one in five handbags contains a significant amount of harmful bacteria that can pose a threat to human health.
Technical Manager at Initial Hygiene, Peter Barratt, said:
"Handbags come into regular contact with our hands and a variety of surfaces, so the risk of transferring different germs onto them is very high, especially as bags are rarely cleaned.
Once these germs get on the bags, they can easily be transferred via hands onto other surfaces. Regular hand sanitization is essential to prevent the presence of bacteria in the first place and thorough cleaning of bags is recommended to prevent the build-up of contamination."

Conjoined Twins born in Ghana won’t survive separation – Doctor

Conjoined Twins born in Ghana won’t survive separation – Doctor

The Medical Director at the Central Regional Hospital, Dr Daniel Asare says the conjoined twins born in the Central region recently may end up worse off if attempts were made to separate them.
The twin girls, born to a 16-year old mother have two heads, two necks and share one heart.
The spines of the girls have merged together in a common torso.
They also share a common waist, sex organ and one pair of legs and arms.
Dr Daniel Asare told XYZ News that the conjoined twins could live a more fulfilling life without being separated.
He warned that any attempt to separate them could put their lives in danger.
The Doctor added that the chances of the twins’ survival, if any such separation attempts were made, would be negligible.

Ghanaian girl walks again after British doctors performed ground-breaking surgery on her deformed legs

Ghanaian girl walks again after British doctors performed ground-breaking surgery on her deformed legs

British doctors have helped a 12-year-old Ghanaian girl with a rare leg deformity to walk again after two ground-breaking operations in which they had to break both her legs in three places.
Gloria Abeka, from Accra, will spend more than eight months in the UK recovering from the operations to correct her painful bowed legs, which also included them being pinned with 22 screws in what is a rare procedure in this country.
She is now able to sit and stand and she will soon be able to walk and play with friends for the first time. She said the doctors who helped her have changed her life.
Gloria suffered a rare bone disease called Blount's and had grown accustomed to pain and disfigurement.
The condition - a severe growth disorder which caused both her legs to bend and twist inwards below the knees - left Gloria consigned to crutches and a wheelchair, unable to play with friends or sit in comfort.
