Former Zambian President asked for $1m for 2011 presidential campaign – Nigerian Witness

A Nigerian state witness has testified that former President Rupiah Banda asked for US$1 million (K5.4 billion) from his company for the 2011 presidential campaign.
SARB managing director Akpan Ekpene yesterday told the court that Mr Banda asked his fugitive son Henry to handle the money.
Mr Ekpene was testifying in a matter in which the former President, 75, of house number 3 plot 2759 off Leopards Hill Road in Lusaka is charged with one count of abuse of authority of office.
Mr Ekpene told the court that he informed Banda that he would “do his best” to find the money as Zambia sought to purchase oil from Nigeria.
Banda is alleged to have procured a US$2.5 million Nigerian government-to-government oil contract in the name of the republic of Zambia “which he in fact meant to benefit himself and his family”.
Mr Ekpene testified that in an earlier meeting with Banda, he had mentioned that the government-to-government oil transaction would be good for the country and would also support his political party (MMD).

Sudanese Leader Omar Al-Bashir Has Left Nigeria amid Calls of His Arrest

A Sudanese diplomat says President Omar al-Bashir has left Nigeria after human rights lawyers and civil rights activists demanded his arrest.
Al-Bashir has been indicted for genocide and war crimes in Darfur.
The diplomat who would not give his name told The Associated Press that al-Bashir left at 3 p.m. Monday, less than 24 hours after he arrived and in the middle of a two-day summit ending Tuesday.
He denied that al-Bashir's hasty departure was related to demands for his arrest. Human rights lawyers filed a lawsuit Monday to try to compel the government to detain Sudan's president and surrender him to the International Criminal Court for trial.
Nigeria's government says it followed an African Union instruction that its 53 member states should not arrest al-Bashir.

Chimamanda Disses Caine Prize, Abubakar replies ‘Go F**k Yourself’

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has sparked what could be described as“the battle of Africa’s Literary Giants”. Kiyoandfilo gathered that the author of ‘Americana’ in a recent interview, made nonsense of the Caine Prize for African Writing, which was won by Nigerian writer Tope Folarin.
In the interview conducted by American graduate student and blogger Aaron Bady, Chimamanda also made reference to another Ngerian writer Elnathan John, as “one of my boys”

Here is an excerpt;

Elnathan was one of my boys in my workshop. But what’s all this over-privileging of the Caine Prize, anyway? I don’t want to talk about the Caine Prize, really. I suppose it’s a good thing, but for me it’s not the arbiter of the best fiction in Africa. It’s never been. I know that Chinelo is on the short list, too. But I haven’t even read the stories—I’m just not very interested. I don’t go to the Caine Prize to look for the best in African fiction…I go to my mailbox, where my

The state government and Mbu have been at loggerheads since the onset of the political crisis in the state occasioned by the sack of the executive of the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Amaechi.
