Chairman
of South-East Governors’s Forum and Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi has
announced his retirement from active politics.
The
Governor, who disclosed this on Sunday, said he would quit active politics at
the end of his current tenure in March 2014.
He
spoke at the thanksgiving service and award ceremony to mark the end of the 2nd
Session of the 15th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Enugu at the St.
Bartholomew’s Church, Asata, Enugu.
“A
very prominent person called me today and asked me, what is your plan
concerning politics after your current tenure, I’m telling you now what I told
him.
“For
me, I have come to the end of it; I want to quit and rest. However, I have been
praying to God that for the sake of the good people of Anambra State, please
give them somebody like Peter Obi.

Gunmen free 175 prisoners in Akure jailbreak
There
was pandemonium in the early hours of Sunday when gunmen, numbering about 30,
invaded the Olokuta Medium Security Prisons in Akure, Ondo State capital, and
set about 175 inmates free.
The
bandits, according to eyewitnesses, arrived at the prison premise, which is
less than one kilometre away from the headquarters of the 32 Artillery Brigade
of the Nigerian Army, also known as Owena Barracks, around 12. 05am, shooting
indiscriminately.
The
armed men were said to have gained entry into the prison by using dynamite to
blow off a section of the walls, after a futile attempt to enter through the
main entrance.
A
source said one of the warders was hit by the attackers’ bullets, was ordered
to release the keys to the cells, and was also forced to set the inmates free.
15 lecturers demoted for having faked Ph.D degrees certificate in Ebonyi
NO fewer than 15 lecturers of Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo were weekend, demoted over alleged involvement in certificate forgery and for claiming to have acquired Ph.D degrees from reputable institutions outside the country.
Management
of the college, on receipt of the report and recommendations of the committee
set up to look into the alleged claims by the lecturers, said the exercise was
not meant to witch-hunt anybody in particular but to ensure sanity and discipline
within the education sector in the state.
At
a press briefing in Abakaliki, Special Adviser to Governor Martin Elechi of
Ebonyi State on Higher Education, Professor Mike Ituma, revealed that the
discovery came as a shock, stressing that the action of the affected lecturers
was a reflection of the level of decay ravaging the sector.
According
to him, the action of the management of the college is a step in the right
direction and government is completely in support of the action against the
lecturers.
In
a statement, Public Relations Officer of the college, Mr. Nkwuda Bethrand
Otukobelu, noted that the 15 affected lecturers would not be allowed to run any
promotion course packaged by the college till after three years.

A
27-year-old secondary school dropout, Ismaila Dauda, has been arrested by the
Ogun State Police Command for an alleged abduction.
Dauda,
a fledgling actor, based in Ondo, was accused of attempting to abduct the wife
of the traditional ruler of Ilisan Remo in March 2013, with the help of three
others- Segun, Nurudeen and an unidentified man.
However,
Dauda said he was not aware that he was part of a gang of kidnappers until too
late.
He
said, “At the time, I was not aware that it was a planned abduction. Segun is a
close friend and had borrowed my car. Because the car was without a spare tyre
and not in good condition, I offered to drive him wherever he wanted.
“I
was under the impression that Segun was in search of a suitable school for his
teaching practice as he is a student of a College of Education,” Dauda said.
Dauda,
Segun and Nurudeen allegedly left Ondo, while a fourth unidentified man was
picked up at Ore. Under Segun’s direction, Dauda allegedly drove to a secondary
school close to the palace of the Oba of Ilisan in Ogun State.

“I never authorised sale of FG property in Washington D.C” – Ogwu
Nigeria’s
Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Joy Ogwu, says she did not authorise
the sale of any Federal Government property in Washington D.C. during her
tenure as foreign minister from2006-2007.
Ogwu
gave the clarification in an interview with reporters on Saturday in Abuja.
Her
comments came on the heels of her invitation by the Senate Committee on Foreign
Affairs investigating the alleged embezzlement of 23.5 million dollars from the
Nigerian embassy in Washington D.C.
The
funds were said to be proceeds from the sale of three Federal Government houses
in Washington DC between 2004 – 2007.
NAN
recalls that the Senate initiated the probe following a petition by one Mr
David Elombah.
Ogwu
said: “In a letter dated June 10, I was invited by the Senate Committee on
Foreign Affairs on a petition concerning misappropriation and embezzlement of
funds by the Nigerian ambassador to the U.S. and others.
“Paragraph
two of the letter states that I am invited to the meeting in my capacity as
former foreign affairs minister 2006-2007.

San Francisco City Hall, where unions were due to resume immediately.
Meanwhile,
the couple whose case sparked this week’s Supreme Court decision exchanged vows
in a ceremony officiated by state Attorney General Kamala Harris.
“This
is really a great day,” said Sandy Stier, who with her fiancée Kristin Perry
filed the lawsuit against Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that outlawed
same-sex marriage in California in 2008.
California,
which briefly allowed marriages in 2008, now becomes the 13th state, and the
largest, to allow gay marriage.
