Malawian President, Joyce
Hilda Banda has proved once again that leadership is not just about self-aggrandisement
but being responsible to the followers and the same time making needful sacrifices.
The 63-year-old leader
recently donated the sum of $75,000 to victims of July 20, 2011 shootings in
which 20 people died and several others injured in her country.
"My heart goes out to all of you who were affected by the shootings on
20 July 2011. I know you face a lot of challenges following the loss of your
loved ones some of whom were breadwinners for their families," she
said.
Referring to the affected
victims, JB as she is fondly called said, "I know you do not have sustainable sources of income for your upkeep,
for school fees for your children, fertilizer and other necessities"
The President said the $75,000
she gave to the victims was the money she received as honorarium for a lecture
she delivered in Lagos, Nigeria – she asked the victims to use the funds to renovate
their houses.
