Obafemi
Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been ranked as the best university in Nigeria
and the eighth in Africa.
This
was revealed in the latest webometric ranking conducted by a world renowned
research council, Cybermetrics Lab, which is based in Spain.
Kiyoandfilo learnt
that in the list of ten best universities in Arica, South African universities
occupies the first to third position; they also held on to the fifth, sixth,seventh
and ninth position. Meanwhile, Makerere University of Uganda occupies the
fourth position, while Cairo University of Egypt is the tenth best university
in Africa.
Auchi
Polytechnic, University of Ibadan and University of Lagos ranked 23, 24 and 25
in Africa, while University of Ghana ranked 18.
Though
OAU is ranked 8th in Africa, Kiyoandfilo gathered that its world
ranking is 1,113; in the same vein, University of Kwazulu Natal that ranked 1st
in Africa is 381 in world ranking. According to webometric, Harvard University
is the best in the world.
Webometric
in their research considers the scientific impact of the university activities
and the economic relevance of the technology transfer to industry, the
community engagement (social, cultural, environmental roles) and even the
political influence.
Research
output is also key topic for Webometrics; this includes formal (e-journals,
repositories) publications and informal scholarly communication. In addition, Webometrics
uses link analysis for quality evaluation.
