Lawmakers seek compulsory HIV test for intending couples

The Bauchi State House of Assembly is working on a bill that will make it mandatory for intending couples to undergo HIV screening.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported on Monday that the bill, sponsored by Ilyasu Zwall, representing Lere/Bula Constituency, had already gone through first and Second reading.
He said that the bill, when passed, would require intending couples to be tested for HIV in any government recognised hospital “at a time not earlier than one week to the day of the wedding.” It also made it mandatory for individuals to conduct tests when marrying additional wives.
According to the lawmaker, the enactment of the law is long over-due considering the number of lives being lost as a result of marriages contracted without checking the HIV status of couples.

Baby Rescued From Sewage Pipe in China

The dramatic rescue began after cries were heard from a fourth-floor apartment toilet.
Alarmed neighbors heard the sounds and saw a tiny foot inside a ceramic bowl. There was a baby inside.
They called the fire department in the Chinese city of Jinhua, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Unable to pull the infant out out, rescuers went to the floor below and sawed away an entire section of sewer pipe.
But still, the baby was stuck, so both the section of pipe and the infant were taken to a local hospital.
Working together, rescuers and doctors began removing the pipe, piece by piece, as shown in video from CCTV.
It shows the exact moment hands in white gloves gingerly pulled away a part of the pipe, revealing the tiny face of a newborn.
The afterbirth was still attached.
CCTV reported the infant, a baby boy, was rescued Saturday. He is in stable condition.
No one has come forward yet to claim the child, and police say they are looking for his parents.
Jinhua police issued an appeal on the social media website Weibo.

"Mom, come back! The baby is resilient and alive. Please show up, Mom. This is your own baby and he should return to your warm embrace soon."

Wife sues husband for allegedly spending more nights with second wife

There was a mild drama at Lugbe Area Court, Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory on Monday where a 35-year old woman, Maryam Mohammed, dragged her husband, Adamu Mohammed, before the court for allegedly spending more nights with his second wife.
Maryam accused his husband, who resides with her in Sabon-Lugbe along Airport Road, Abuja, of neglect, selfishness and starving her of sex and food.
She added that she could have died of hunger and loneliness if not for her parents who had been feeding her. She however pleaded the court to dissolve their marriage forthwith, to enable her marry another man who can take good care of her and make her feel like a woman. In her words, “My Lord, whenever it is my turn for the night, my husband would sneak into my second’s bedroom and spend the night there.
“He has neglected me; he has become very selfish and no longer gives me food or money for my feeding. Rather, it is my parents who have been sending me food. I am seeking immediate divorce to enable me marry a man who can take care of me.”
While denying his wife allegations, the defendant, Mohammed said he had been sick for a while, hence could not satisfy his wife’s sexual urge and needs.
He said, “My Lord, I cannot satisfy her needs because of my prolonged illness, but now that I am getting better and I still love her, I urge her to stay and the court should not grant her any divorce.”

However the Presiding Judge, Mr Haruna Masanawa, adjourned the case to June 3 for further hearing and directed both parties to come with their parents or witnesses.

While the midwife was being paraded before journalists at the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, on Friday, the victims told their stories, with faces covered for security reasons.
Cecilia said she had not been able to give her 78-year-old husband a child since they got married.
She stated, “A lady who knew I had tried to conceive without success for a long time, told me about the midwife (George). The lady gave me the phone number of the woman and I learnt her clinic is in Port Harcourt.
“When I got there in March 2012, she explained to me that she would be able to treat me with herbs and I would get pregnant. I was told to pay N1.5m, which I paid to her.

Nwankwo was arraigned at the Magistrate’s Court 6, Ikeja and sent to Kirikiri Prison as he could not perfect the stringent bail conditions granted to him by the magistrate.
The accused had pleaded not guilty to the charge of defiling a minor and having carnal knowledge of her forcefully.

Kiyo: The accused was alleged to have been having sex with the little girl since she was eight years old.
Test conducted on the girl at the Orile Agege General Hospital showed that she was no longer a virgin.
The alleged illicit act was exposed when the three-year old brother of the victim told their mother that somebody used to lay his sister down when nobody was around.
