DO YOU KNOW?: Today's Feature is WILL SMITH




1. Will, the second of four children, was born Willard Christopher Smith in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1968, to Willard, a refrigeration company owner and Caroline, a school administrator.

2. Smith began rapping at age 12, emulating heroes like Grandmaster Flash but tinging his rhymes with a comic element that would later become his trademark. At 16, Smith met a DJ at a party by the name of Jeff Townes. The pair became friends, and the duo DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince was born.

3. In 1988, DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince continued their success with the album He's The DJ, I'm The Rapper featuring the radio-friendly singles "Parents Just Don't Understand," "Brand New Funk," and "Nightmare on My Street." The album won the first ever Grammy Award for a Rap Performance.

5. Will's first day of acting was the opening episode of hit sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. He says of the show's first season: "I was trying so hard. I would memorise the entire script, then I'd be lipping everybody's lines while they were talking. When I watch those episodes, it's disgusting. My performances were horrible."

6. Will Smith wrote the children's book Just the Two of Us; the book depicts the relationship between a son and his father

7. Smith's first steps into super-stardom came with the film, Bad Boys (1995). The high-budget cop movie saw him team up with comic Actor, Martin Lawrence.

8. Smith has been married twice. His first marriage in 1992 lasted only three years but produced a son, Willard Smith III, who is also known as Trey. He has been married to actress Jada Pinkett Smith since 1997. The couple has a son, Jaden, who was born in 1998 and a daughter, Willow, born in 2000.

9. Will Smith enjoys sitting down to a challenging game of chess. "The elements and concepts of life are so perfectly illustrated on a chess board," gushes Will, who learned from his dad at the age of seven.

10. Smith gave $1.3 million to charities in 2007, of which $450,000 went to two Christian ministries, and $122,500 went to three Scientology organizations; the remaining beneficiaries included "a Los Angeles mosque, other Christian-based schools and churches, and the Yitzhak Rabin Memorial Centre in Israel"
